Lobby Groups and Their Impact.
The Dictionary of American History briefly defines lobbies as"groups of individuals acting for themselves or others who seek to influence the decisions of government officials." You have chosen a lobby group to research. You've discovered who they represent, what causes they support and how they lobby for change.

What is the mission of your chosen lobby group, and what impact does it have on society and the United States?

MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving is an organization that works to try to prevent drunk driving accidents. MADD works to eliminate drunk driving, focusing more on young teens. This organization headquartered in Irving, Texas. MADD was started to aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. It was formed on September 5th, 1980 by a mother named Candice Lightner, whose son and daughter were victims of a drunk driving accident and were killed.
ReplyDeleteMADD has no gender restriction. MADD works to help females and males to avoid drunk driving. It is not racial and has no environmental effects. MADD defends victim’s civil liberties. The safety of teens is MADD’s mission. MADD works to protect victims of drunk driving accidents. MADD helps people get the financial, and emotional help they need after a senseless accident like this occurs. MADD wants to stop drinking and driving all together, too many people are dying because of drunk driving accidents.
A band named Simple Plan teamed up with MADD to advocate teens on MTV about drinking and driving problems. Simple Plan also made a song called "Sober" to catch young teen’s attention and to encourage them not to drink. MTV puts commercials on T.V to try to prevent drinking and driving accidents. There are health classes in schools all around the world that teach students the results of drinking and driving and how dangerous it is.
Mothers against Drunk Drivers have an impact on our country. Every parent out there who has lost a loved son or daughter due to a drunk driving accident will be affected by this group or people who have become a part of MADD will be affected also. People who sponsor this organization care deeply about parents, and other family members who have lost a loved one. Our country is being affected every day, every minute someone dies somewhere in this world. The number one cause of teen death is drunk driving accidents, this group is designed to prevent drunk driving deaths.

PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is a lobby group that makes sure that all animals around the world are protected and safe from being hurt. PETA was founded in 1980 by Ingrid Newkirk. The PETA lobby group has over 3 million members and supporters worldwide. PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA’s worldwide mission is to support animal rights. PETA helps save animals from being tested for products, to stop factory farms that raise and kill animals for food, to prevent animals from being killed for clothing such as in leathers and furs. They also try to stop abuse in the entertainment industry, like the circus, movies, and rodeos.
ReplyDeletePETA is important because they believe that animals deserve rights just like humans. They try and help the animals from being used for testing and experimented on for cosmetics, shampoos, and food. They also try to regulate how animals are used in the entertainment industries and the circus. PETA believes that animal abuse should be stopped. PETA’s plan is to make sure that animals are safe at all times and get the rights that they deserve.

One of the most important groups that lobby the government is the National Rights to Life Committee (NRLC). NRLC spends a lot of time trying to stop abortions from happening. The founder of NRLC is Paul Mission. Mission wanted to help families. He has lobbied his cause and presented it to the Supreme Court.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things they try to do is talk to people about the negative affects of abortion. The group also wants to try to give people that have a baby support. People don’t have much money to take care of the baby so the NRLC looks for ways to help them, such as helping them apply for Medicaid.
People who support this lobby group want less abortions available; they want people to have support when pregnant or terminally ill and the lobby group believes there should be no research using human stem cells. NRLC thinks every human should have a right to life. One of NRLC's main missions is to try to make a law to stop abortions. President Obama does not support this bill stopping abortions.

The lobby group, the National Rights to Life (NRL) is helping people and protecting them even if they have no insurance. President Obama supports the NRL because they want to help save people’s lives and protect them even regardless of their insurance or lack of it. Much of the NRL lobbying occurs in Washington DC. The NRL is advocating because they believe in protecting people. The NRL has existed since 1973. One large concern is for the NRL is abortion.
ReplyDeleteThe House of Representatives decides the law regarding abortion, should it be the woman’s choice to keep the baby or have an abortion? Also, the NRL does not support the death penalty, they would rather keep offenders in prison. Under all circumstances, giving up a life is wrong, the NRL is against it.
