Using your graphic organizer as your guide, write a well-thought out paragraph about this topic. It should include:
  • Title (in bold):  Dress Codes
  • Topic Sentence (thesis)
  •  3-4 body sentences (supporting arguments and textual evidence from the documents to support your augments)

  1. Dress Codes

Dress codes don’t allow students to express themselves freely. Dress codes prevent students from dressing the way they want and that prevents them from being who they are. “Supreme court states freedom to dress as you want as long as you aren’t distracting, but that’s still not dressing freely.” says Barbara Cruz. If people keep students from dressing how they want, because students will stretch the limits. Therefore, school dress codes shouldn’t be so strict because it limits students freedom to express themselves and students will find a way around it.

  2. Dress Codes

Dress codes prevent people from being who they want to be, limiting student’s ability to express themselves freely. Students today are more curious about styles than they were a few years ago. Students want the freedom to be able to express themselves in how they. Kathleen Modenbach claims, “If you prevent kids from expressing themselves, they will stretch the limits and break more rules.” This is true because students will want to break the rules if they feel the rule is unfair. Dress codes prevent students from expressing their own style, it limits students from showing their personality. If the dress codes keep restricting students from wearing whatever they want, students will stretch the limits and it could impact their behavior. School dress codes restrict students from expressing their true identity.

  3. Dress Codes

Enforcing the dress code negatively affects the way students learn. Students often get in school suspension for disobeying the dress code at their school. If students are in ISS they are missing instructional time. The students do not care and they will keep wearing the same type of clothing because students are rebellious. Barbra C. Cruz once stated that many parents and educators doubt that uniforms decrease miss behavior, because there is little data on the cause and effect relationship. There is no evidence that school uniforms or dress codes work, there are still distractions, and miss behavior in the class room. Therefore enforcing dress codes does not improve student learning.

  4. Dress Code

Dress codes should allow for freedom of expression, however students should be appropriately covered. Parent Sherrie Ellis believes that administrators need to be more specific at what children can wear. Dave Skillman, a St. Louis high school principal, said, “I think clothing choices are just that, choices, I think it’s very important to teenagers, & if it’s not distracting or offensive to others, I think that’s an area where choice is important.” Both parents & administrators agree with that students should be able to have the choice to wear what they choose as long as it’s appropriate. Dress codes need to allow freedom of expression but students should be appropriately covered.

  5. Dress Codes and the First Amendment

Dress codes limit freedom of expression. The United States is land of the free, not of the free and well dressed. Freedom of expression gives people the opportunity to express themselves in their own way, and this is important to students as well. For example, three students from Des Moines, Iowa wore black arm bands to school in protest of the Vietnam War. The students were suspended when they refused to take them off. They took their case to court and won in the famous Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines. Even the Supreme Court supports student’s freedom of expression. As Kaitlin Tokarski insists, “Dress codes infringe upon First Amendment freedoms.”

  6. Dress Codes

Accorded to dress codes they are good for schools because it encourages appropriate dress and behavior. According to the Brockport School dress code, don’t wear clothes that expose skin. Wearing tube tops, net tops, halter tops and see-through clothing is disrespectful. Make sure that your underwear is covered. Wear a belt to keep your pants up. Barbra Cruz claims “more of a focus on academics, less on clothing.” The appearance of a student is the responsibility of the student and the parents. “We expect students to maintain a appearance which is not distracting to teachers or other students nor draws undue attention or in any way disrupts the instructional program of the school.” According to Lutheran schools dress codes, having dress codes are good because it makes kids focus more on their education.

  7. Dress codes

Dress codes are helpful to have in high school because they prevent school violence. Dress codes prevent people from robbing other people and stealing from each other because it prevents fights from happening because students would like what others have. Having a school dress codes that “prevents students from smuggling weapons into school is of vital concern from the National School Safety Center” according to School Dress Codes. Dress codes prevents from people taking other things they want or would like because they are jealous, as stated in the school dress codes. In conclusion, oversized coats, jackets and backpacks are banned because they are used to hide items that can lead to violence.

  8. Dress codes

Dress codes should be enforced in schools in order to be respectful of other people views and cultures. These decisions based the fact to avoid hurting someone. Even though you’re not being mean or saying bad things somebody can take the way you dress the wrong way. According to an article from Great Schools.org by Marian Wilde, when students are focused on appearance grades can slip, and the chosen clothing can contribute to tension and even violence among the students body. In the book School Dress Codes by Barbara C. Cruz, she sates that,” schools enforce dress codes to stop school violence. As one educator put it, we have dress codes for the same reasons we have stop lights.” They make schools safer.
Clearly, dress codes are good to have in schools because they prevent people from being offended by others and can prevent violence and getting I trouble.

  10. Dress Codes

Dress Codes are favorable, because you’re don’t want to see others dressed inappropriately. Having a dress codes limits opportunities to be inappropriate.
Recognize that extremely brief garments that reveal or expose skin between the upper chest and mid thigh areas are distracting. This includes the wearing of head covering such as (Hats, Bandanas, Rags.) Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process by wearing inappropriate clothing.

  11. Dress Codes

Dress codes should be enforced in schools in order to show respect of other people’s views. Some inappropriate clothing might offend and disturb other students and staff in the school. The Brockport High School Student Dress Code states, “Clothing that people wear should not be offensive to others.” It goes on to insist, “Schools is a place of business and learning.” We should all dress so that everyone can work and learn. Dress codes can prepare young people for the “real world” of work. Many schools have similar dress codes that are used to create a respectful environment.

  12. In the dress code tattoos should be allowed in school as long as if they are not being discussed in class or vulgar in appearance. One girl, named Brianna Stephenson, in 1997 was punished by the Davenport Community School District. She had a cross on her arm and the school thought it was “gang related” the girl said it wasn’t gang related. But the school said it was, so she had to get it removed or suffer the consequences. She went through the painful operation to get her tattoos removed. After she got them removed she sued the school. The court said it’s not illegal to wear a tattoo because it’s a symbolic speech. At my school, I talked to the principal Dr. Bochnack about it and she said tattoos are allowed as long as there not disgusting or vulgar. If it is vulgar it must be covered up.

  13. Dress Codes

Dress codes limit the freedom of expressions. How a person presents themselves to their peers and the rest of the world says a lot about how they feel about themselves. Under the First Amendment, an individual has the right to exercise their religion and the right of free speech among others. A dress code limits a person’s way of expression. The dress code abuses these rights that’s not to say that a dress code should not be instituted at all, but removing students rights is not the solution. Taking students rights is wrong for the school system to do!

  14. Dress Codes

Dress codes are good to have in school because the dress code eliminates distractions in school and improves the learning environment . Dress codes eliminate distractions and improves the learning environment. According to The Journal of Law and Education, “Out of 240 principals 85% reporting that dress codes were needed to improve student behavior and reduces sexual behavior.” Dress codes are good, and parents agree. In the Fort Campell Courier, one parent explains, “It is a good idea if the kids wear the same thing, the students can focus on classes rather than who afford what. “ Dress codes should be in schools because it keeps students focused during class. Dress codes should be enforced in schools because the students can be more focused on their school work and not what clothes they have on.

  15. Dress Code

Students should not have a dress code because it limits clothing choice. From the article in the Houston chronicle by Elizabeth White she says that students from the Gonzales school “ must don navy blue overalls unless they get another set of clothes from home –or serve in –school suspension,” this is too extreme to be taking place in school. The Brockport dress code states that teachers and all other district personal should exemplify and reinforce acceptable student dress and help students developed an understanding of appropriate appearance in the school setting. So, by teachers setting an example how to dress they should not have to an enforce strict dress codes. Strict dress code policies don’t allow students to have freedom to wear what they want. By teachers setting a good example by dressing appropriate and being good role models students shouldn’t need a strict dress code.

  16. Dress Codes

Dress codes limit freedom of expression. People wear different items of clothing for all sorts of reasons. For example, people wear different clothes to be in style and follow the latest trends, to support their favorite band or sports team, and even for religious and political reasons. The United States is a free country and students should have freedom to choose what they wear. Barbara Cruz writes, “The Supreme Court in 1965 ruled… The First Amendment of the U.S Constitution protected the students’ rights to express their political views in a non-disrupted way.” Thing was the famous case, Tinker V. Des Moine. Freedom of expression should be allowed.

  17. Dress codes
Dress codes are good to have in schools; however schools should not go to the extreme to enforce them. For example in Gonzales high school in Texas, ”violators of the district’s beefed-up dress codes must don navy blue coveralls unless they get another set of clothes from home… the outfits aren’t just styled like prison jumpsuits they are actually made the Texas inmates.” If we have jumpsuits it would look like we are in jail. When your put into a jumpsuits its more for being bad and when you’re in school your there to learn and not feel like you’re in trouble. Some uniforms prevent individuality. Dress codes are good because there are just some things people should and should not wear. Most dress codes are good because they can keep people safe.
